Having qualified as a solicitor in June 1975, Hywel Hughes was the first Branch Crown Prosecutor for Cardiff at the inception of the CPS in 1986. He was an Assistant Chief Crown Prosecutor for the Wales area, when he left the service for a career at the Bar in 1995, since when he has practised exclusively in Criminal Law.
His particular areas of specialisation are Fraud, including Revenue and Benefit offences, Proceeds of Crime, serious road traffic offences where death results, and major drugs conspiracies (VHCC).
He is a CPS Grade 4 prosecutor.
